Communicating with flair; yes, with 'R.E.A.L. - F.L.A.I.R.'
Communicating with flair is the first of Mark's Big Ten Outstanding People Skills and for a very good reason; it is fundamental and provides a framework for all of the other nine. Communicating with flair is composed of nine major groups of principles, strategies and skills, as indicated by the acronym R.E.A.L. - F.L.A.I.R.
R.E.A.L. How to: build and maintain Rapport; Explain without sounding condescending; Acknowledge people's efforts and show empathy; Let people 'have their say' so they feel heard and valued; and
F.L.A.I.R. How to: Frame and keep focused; Listen for understanding and agreement; Ask without sounding demanding; say 'I' followed by a feeling word; and take Responsibility not only for your own errors but also, when appropriate, for misunderstandings which may even be the result of the other person's poor communication.
It also includes the art of Being Impeccable which is all about displaying Good Manners and getting rid of Relationship Wreckers. Of course, most people have these skills to some degree, but the issue is that people are better off, as are the people with whom they deal, when these skills are highly tuned. It is surprising how many people don't have them developed to the level they need to meet the demands of their roles at work, at home and at play. And when they are not highly tuned, work and relationships suffer. When staff Communicate with flair, the likelihood of having a respectful and harmonious workplace increases.
Many of the elements of Communicating with flair are included, in one way or another, in all of the other nine Big Ten Outstanding People Skills. This is because they are very much about applying the essence of Communicating with flair to specific circumstances involving specific conversations, specific situations and specific people.
